As beach volleyball is a spring sport, there is a long training season before your athletes will even get the opportunity to compete! This can leave your athletes antsy, overtrained, or even worse, burnt out by the time March around. In this session, you will discover best practices for your yearly planning, how to best utilize your fall practice hours, building out your spring calendar with competitions and training, and recommendations for creating a balance between training and intrasquad competitions to keep your athletes engaged and peaking in time for the season.

Creating a championship-caliber team starts with getting the right athletes into your program; Learn from one of the best on how to recruit top athletes. Anna will share best practices for identifying talent, maximizing your budget by attending the right events, and getting involved with organizations to build a healthy pipeline into your program.
Team Management: Partnerships, Communication, and Culture
Managing your roster in collegiate beach volleyball is way more complex than indoor. While it is a “team” sport, there are many aspects of it that make it more like an individual game. Anna shares strategies on partnering athletes and building your lineup, opening lines of communication, and building a dynamic team culture. This session will also cover how to handle partnership disputes, managing the bottom third of your roster, and appreciating communication styles.

The Hybrid Mindset: Transitioning Duel Sport Athletes
What’s the difference between athletes who transition easily to the beach and those who never seem to find their “sand legs”? Ali covers the key elements of transitioning an indoor athlete to the beach that will get them functioning in time for beach season. She will discuss the common areas of struggle, both physically and mentally, and how to overcome them.
Getting Sandy: Structuring Training and Preparing for Competition
Some aspects cross over well from indoor to beach but copy and paste doesn’t always work for beach volleyball. Before you hit the sand learn how to manage numbers, pace, feedback and motivation with your athletes whether they are in partnerships or fluctuate. Learning the language, descriptions, and queues are essential. Beach athletes need rest and you will need to learn how to taper training styles before competitions.
The Other 90% of Your Job: Time Off the Sand
A common misconception of taking a collegiate coaching job is that you’ll spend most of your time doing what you love: coaching. In reality, most of your work will be spent off the court and in the office. Learn from Ali on how to build relationships with the VIPs of your administration, tips on fundraising, and managing your budget.

MoFlexStAgility: The Essentials of Beach Fitness - Chris Vu
Beach volleyball requires a unique strength and conditioning regimen that’s individually tailored in order for your athlete(s) to perform at the highest levels possible. Chris will educate and walk you through easily applicable exercises that focus on mobility, flexibility, strength, balance/stability, conditioning, speed/power, and agility. He will discuss a yearly timeline that includes differences between fall and spring training as well as what to do leading up to the days of competition and different effective recovery methods to help aid your training.
Athlete Wellbeing: Building a Culture of Health and Wellness - Kamila Tan
Building a healthy beach volleyball team and healthy culture goes far beyond ensuring that athletes are physically fit and able to compete. The pressure to perform and “fit in” with teammates and friends can become an added pressure for young, developing athletes that can impact their mental health. Mental illnesses are becoming more common in young athletes. Kamila will share her experience of battling anxiety, depression, and eating disorders as a student-athlete at UCLA, how she overcame those hurdles, and how she re-built a healthy relationship with food and exercise. She will discuss how to have an open and nonjudgmental dialogue with your athletes about her mental state, how-to guide your athletes to the proper resources for treating mental illness, and how to address stigma in a team culture. Kamila will also give a brief overview of the importance of nutrition for an athlete and how to cultivate a healthy dialogue among your athletes around the subject of food and exercise.
Essentials of Sports Medicine for Beach: Precovery and Recovery for Optimal Performance - Stacy Struble
Beach volleyball fits into the individual sport world in terms of how most competitions are structured. Your athletes will most likely be on the beach for at least 4-6 hours in a day and have 2-3 matches scheduled throughout. This requires a thought out plan for nutrition, warm-up, and cool-down. Stacy will use her experience with Team USA to discuss how our professional athletes manage their time and diet throughout a day and what you can implement before and after the competition to maximize performance and minimize injuries.
Developing a Strong Mind: Athlete Confidence through Routine and Self Talk - Ryan Foose
Today, competition requires your athletes to consistently be their best. Reaching their peak performance takes more than just training their bodies; they also need to condition their minds. Ryan will use his experience and knowledge in Sport Psychology to give you the mental tools to train your athletes. These tools will help enhance their focus and will give them the ability to stay composed under high-pressure situations. Training the mind creates a pathway to reaching peak performance consistently. Don’t leave peak performance up for luck in the moments that matter the most!
